Mount Mera peak (6654m) is a popular permitted 18th trekking peak in Nepal which stands to the south of Mount Everest & dominates the watershed between heavily wooded valleys of the Inkhu. J.O. M. Roberts & Sen Tenzing were the first to climb its top on 20 May 1953. The route they used is still the standard route for the climbers.
It is a lifetime experience for the trekkers to walk from Lukla through the Sherpa country of the remote Inkhu valley which offers superb scenery, and abundant wildlife - including rumored sightings of the legendary yeti. You can also do ski descending from the near TOP from where you can see Mount Everest 8848m. Mount Makalu 8464m. Mount Kanchanjunga 8586m. Mount Lhotse 8516meters as well as many tiny snow covered mountains.
After conquering Mount Mera, walk over Mera La pass and drop into the remote, unexplored yet majestically beautiful Hunku Valley which is remote, isolated and rarely visited by trekking groups yet wide, open and truly wonderful. Walking northwards for several days and encountering many glacial lakes which are likely to be frozen solid allows us to walk right over the top of them. Our last camp spot before the pass is at Panch Pokhari (5 lakes), an exposed alpine expanse where you will be amazed by beautiful surrounding.
Professional guides will be there to help you to cross difficult Amphu Lapcha . We begin moving up rocky screed, approaching some magnificent pristine glacial formations. Rope fixing and Ice steps may need to be cut to assist everyone up onto the glacier. Crampons may be needed to climb the final snow slope to the narrow pass itself as per the condition up there.
Superbly wild, inspirit, breathtaking alpine scenery imaginable are seen from here, and we are unlikely to have seen any other trekkers since leaving Mera La. It is steep moving down and depending on conditions, may involve being belayed part of the way down. Our campsite at the end of a challenging but exciting day is a lovely sheltered grassy area. We walk down to Chukhung and then into the Khumbu valley. Then we reach the beautiful Thyangboche Monastery and the colorful town of Namche Bazaar, before we finally arrive back to Lukla as per our itinerary.
