Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m) or originally Mt. Kangchengdzonga is the third highest mountain in the world, following Everest and K2. The peak lies in the eastern zone of Nepal along the borders of Nepal and Sikkim. According to interpretation in Rai (Limbu) dialect Kangchendzonga means ‘Five Treasures of Snow’.
Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking is one of the longest trails that takes you to the remote wilderness of the Himalayan region. The final destination of the trekking is to reach North and South Base Camp located at an altitude of 5160m. You can also visit Yarlung base camp (4500m) and cross Sele La pass situated at an altitude of 4290m. Spectacular views of Kanchenjuga, Makalu, Kiratchuli, Pathibhara, Tangpa, Chubar and Chang peaks can be seen from many points along the trek. The towering and glorious face of Mt. Kanchenjunga from the base camps will be just awesome.
The entire trail covers rugged mountains, gorges, waterfalls and pristine forests of Arun Valley which falls within territory of Makalu Barun National Park. The vegetation ranges from tropical to alpine hosting over 431 species of birds discovered in the park and such rare species as snow leopard, pheasant, Himalayan thar, magpie red panda and musk deer. The valley most probably has most colorful and highest number of flowering plants in Nepal.
The culture and age old tradition of ethnic community of Rai and Limbu will be added attraction for this trek. The Rai/Limbu are nature worshippers and their indigenous knowledge about nature conservation will be a learning opportunity.
