Jumla - Upper Dolpo (SHEY GOMPA) trek takes you on a journey to Dolpo, a trans- Himalayan region, located on the northwestern part of Nepal adjoining Tibet. Dolpa is the most remote region of Nepal, bordered by Dhaulagiri and Churen Himalayan ranges in the east and south and by Tibet in the north. The trail provides spectacular views of many prominent Himalayan peaks such as Knajiroba Himal, Ghyuthumba, Matathumba, Api Himal, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna Himalayan ranges.
The highest point of the trek is Kagmara La pass at the height of 5100m. Two major highlights of this trek are the visits to Shey Phoksundo Lake (3600m), a Himalayan Ramsar wetland, and the 11th Kaygupa sect Shey Gompa (4126m).
The region is the last refuge of Tibetan culture and tradition on Nepal side of the Himalaya. The people here are Tibetans who follow the ancient Tibetan culture and pre Buddhist religion called Bon. There are ancient and medieval stupas you will encounter here including Guru Bumba, Schipcha Gompa, Champa Gompa, Tshowa and Tsering monastery The trekking trail passes through Shey Phoksumdo National Park, which is known for its pristine natural forests that are home such endangered species as snow leopard, Himalayan bear, Lophophorus, red panda, marten, leopard, jackal etc.
